We’re not waiting for permission, we defy our inhibition
Like our middle name is “fearless”, unafraid
As I’ve made lists and considered different songs for Friday’s Tunes, I’ve noticed a pattern. I gravitate toward songs that encourage boldness to stand up and fight for what you believe in. I was taught to watch out for the overlooked and to speak up for the vulnerable. Too often, I have been them. As I’ve grown older, I have learned to speak up more, in love, and worry less about what others may think. More so as I depend on the Lord to give me the courage to stand up for what is right.
If we’re gonna fly, we fly like eagles, arms out wide
If we’re gonna fear, we fear no evil. We will rise…
If we’re gonna stand, we stand as giants.
If we’re gonna walk, we walk as lions.
The Skillet video didn’t offer much insight into the song, Lions, but this past summer, song leader, John Cooper shared at a concert I attended, that it was inspired by the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. These 3 young men were taken from their homes as teenagers and immersed in the culture of their captors, but they chose to remain steadfast in the faith of their families. They defied a king when he asked them to compromise their beliefs, and they were sentenced to death. The amazing conclusion to their story is found in Daniel, chapter 3. John Cooper also spoke to reporter, Kevin Davis, in August 2017 (News Release Today Article and full lyrics).
I am hardly fearless, nor do I carry myself with the confidence or majesty of a lion. But I do aspire to live with freedom and boldness, and perhaps someday, my middle name will be “fearless”.
