On vacation, it was a great way to start the day, waterside, before we went out to toast the town!
Cardamom French Toast tea by David’s Tea is one of my favourites! This looseleaf black tea also includes cinnamon, lemon peel, coriander seeds, green cardamom pods, coconut sugar, and cane sugar.Moderate caffeine. Just like its name suggests, it was sweet and rich, buttery and decadent…like French Toast. The smell is amazing!! A perfect start to the morning…and a perfect end to the day.
A Toast to Cardamom
A Cardamom is a spice made from the seed pods of various plants in the ginger family. The 2 main types of cardamom are green or black, and green cardamom is the third most expensive spice in the world. Each pod contains a number of seeds, but the whole pod can be used or ground. It is used mostly in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking, and can be used in both main dishes, as well as desserts. It is a lovely addition to Fall and Winter desserts, like apple pie or spiced cakes or puddings, or to give mulled cider a fragrant twist. I have used it in an upside down strawberry cake and it was yummy!
Cardamom has s a strong, ascerbic taste and smell, with hints of lemon, mint, and smoke. Pre-ground cardamom is less flavourful as the oil from the pod is lost in the process. You can purchase whole pods and toast them before grinding yourself to extract greater flavour. I purchased a small amount from a bulk food store to try my cake recipe.
Cardamom may assist with digestion problems including heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, etc. It may be used alongside treatments for colds and other related infections. Don’t consume it if you have gall stones or if you are pregnant. Early research suggests a mixture of ginger, cardamom, and tarragon essential oils to the neck post-surgery or inhaling cardamom, ginger and peppermint, may help relieve nausea and prevent vomiting. As with everything, moderation!
