Bodies everywhere, people falling all across the field. Arms and legs splayed, a disturbing crunch when another man went down. I could see friends, arms around each other, shuffling and limping to safety, an open door beckoning them inside…

We didn’t see it coming. It was the first full day of Spring. The stillness of the morning, the temperature hovering just below freezing…even the bare roads lulled us into a false sense of security.

And now our children were paying the price.

The school yard was a field of ice, worn into a solid sheet by the ebb and flow of the wind, then covered in icing sugar snow. Winter’s maniacal plan to deceive us and keep its icy grip on our bodies and souls…
