My mother emailed me this morning after reading yesterday’s blog. She wrote, “Holly Homemaker is an idiot – her husband divorced her years ago.” Maybe that’s why Holly Homemaker visits me from time to time. She’s lonely and bored…and obviously aware of my own domestic eccentricities and failings…

I am posting my Grandmother’s coleslaw recipe as requested (the one I talked about making in yesterday’s post: Holly Homemaker). I have no idea where my Grandmother got it, but it freezes wonderfully. The first time I made it, I finely shredded 2 heads of cabbage with a knife (I didn’t have a food processor). To pass the time I sat in front of the TV, spilling cabbage all over my living room carpet. That was a mess. I also shredded 1 head of green cabbage and 1 head of purple cabbage…which looked lovely in the slaw until the vinegar in the dressing bleached all the colour out of the cabbage and the salad turned pink!

Mix 5 cups of cabbage, finely shredded, with 1 tsp. salt and let stand for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, mix 2 cups of sugar (or less), ½ cup water, 1 cup vinegar and 1 tsp. celery seed. Heat to a boil, and boil for 1 minute stirring constantly (don’t let it boil over – it makes a mess…trust me)! Let it cool.

Then dice 3 medium celery stalks, 1 small green pepper, 1 medium carrot, and 1 small onion. Mix it altogether and refrigerate or freeze!

I did try one of the apple cinnamon muffins that I baked last night. They were stuck to the pan…and really moist so you have to eat them in a bowl with a fork. But at least they tasted good! I just hope Holly Homemaker doesn’t visit me again for a long while. I’m still pooped, and she left a big pile of dishes for me!
