It seems lately, when I visit my parents for an extended period of time, we often end up spending our evenings having a “marathon”, and staying up way too late to get through it all before I have to head home. We’ve done it with TV series like The Big Bang Theory (comedy), as well as mini series like Band of Brothers (history, war). We used to play more board games, or work on cards into the evening, but lately, we’re all just too tired.

So, this visit (after Little Guy is in bed, of course), we’re watching the short lived TV series, Firefly. Firefly is an American space western series created by writer and director Joss Whedon. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of nine members on a “Firefly” spaceship called Serenity. Apparently Mr. Whedon pitched the show as “nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things”.

I can remember having other kinds of movie marathons with my Mom before I moved away from home. One weekend we watched all the Jaws movies. I can remember watching Prom Night I and Prom Night II, which is surprising because neither of us horror movies. We both like psychological thrillers – figuring out the mystery is more entertaining than blood and guts. We also had a “Psycho” weekend, starting with the original black and white with Janet Leigh, and finishing with the 1998 remake with Vince Vaughn.

What can I say? I have eclectic tastes in all kinds of music and movies. I’ve even gone on to have mini movie marathons with Little Guy – we watched Madagascar and Madagascar 2 recently, with popcorn! (well the guys had popcorn; I can’t eat corn anymore…I like it, but it doesn’t like me)! What I really need to do next time I visit is to either find a shorter, smaller marathon, or find a way to fit it in…and still get my sleep!
